Word to the wise: Take your own groceries in the house.
DC Councilman and former Washington, DC Mayor Marion Barry told reporters that he was robbed at gunpoint yesterday by two youngsters at his home. Surprisingly, Barry's robbers were the same two young men that had helped him carry groceries into his Southeast Washington, DC apartment shortly before the robbery occurred.
Barry told reporters that, after the young fellas helped him with his groceries, he gave them a couple of bucks each for their help and they left. The young men were apparently expecting a tad more for their good deed than a just a few dollars. Perhaps they expected this prominent Washington, DC political figure to be loaded -- who knows. In any event, they came back for more money than the tip they had received from the Ward 8 councilman.
Barry said, although the young men left after unloading the groceries, they returned to his apartment a short while later. On the return visit, these youth showed their true colors. They had less than noble intentions for the councilman for sure.
Barry said that when they came back, the young men sported a gun. Barry said they pointed the gun at his head, and then demanded his wallet. Naturally, the 69 year old Barry obliged the thieves' demands. Luckily, they stole only his wallet containing some cash and credit cards. The thugs responsible for this robbery are still at large.
Although Barry stated that he was not physically injured during the robbery, he said he was traumatized to have a pistol cocked in his face. Washington, DC is a guns-free city; so presumably, Barry did not have his own gun to protect himself and his property.
There is some speculation that the robbery was yet another “set up” at Barry’s expense. Proponents of the “right to bear arms” movement, who are also opposers of the ban on guns in Washington, DC, seem to be gloating over Barry’s recent victimization. In its press release issued today, the CCRKBA states “Gun Bans Don’t Work and Marion Barry is Living Proof of It.” The CCRKBA is an organization for pushing a repeal of the ban on guns.
